Why rushing salah leaves you empty

Speed can leave only a fraction of the prayer written. Slow is a treatment, not a personality.

Rushing salah leaves you empty because the prayer was never designed to be a corridor you run through on the way back to your life. A servant may have only a tenth of the prayer written (Abu Dawud). The collection names a shrinking of what is recorded when the prayer is performed in haste and absence. That is the classical warning against praying too fast. It is not a number for you to sit in fear. It is a reason to stop treating speed as harmless.

People who still pray five times, like locking the door, often rush because the prayer has become a task to complete. The body knows the motions. The mouth knows the words. The clock is waiting. Emptiness then feels like a mystery. It is not much of a mystery. You cannot prefer the prayer to everything else (Ibn al-Qayyim) while performing the prayer as a way to return to everything else.

What haste is doing

Haste hides the leaving. If you recites al-Fatiha at the speed of a password, you will not notice the moment the mind went to the inbox. Slowing is how leaving becomes visible. Visible leaving is the beginning of return. Return, here, is ordinary. You come back to the ayah you are on. You do not restart your deen in the second rakah.

Ghazali says the inattentive prayer is not remembrance, and that presence of heart comes when causes of distraction are cut beforehand. Speed is one of those causes you bring with you. It is also a cause you can cut without buying anything or joining anything. Halve the recitation. That is already a practice on this site. It adds under two minutes to a prayer you were already going to make.

Two minutes is often the whole argument. People who rush are frequently defending those two minutes as if the day would collapse. Sometimes the day is truly tight. Even then, the ten seconds you shave by gabbling the tashahhud are not what saved the day. They are what kept the prayer from being a place.

The last salah problem

Rushing is worse at the end of a long day, and at the prayer you almost skipped. The adhan goes and everything in you refuses, then you stand anyway and race, as if speed will reduce the cost of having stood. It does the opposite. It spends the standing without giving the heart a chance to arrive. Two minutes of stillness before takbir is the treatment for that refusal. You stand first. You wait. Then you begin slowly. This page's next step is still the recitation, because one practice is the rule. The stillness is named so you know it exists.

The gaze at the place of sujood helps a rushed prayer because the eyes, when they wander, pull the body into a hurry to be done. One spot on the floor. The whole salah. No extra time. Combined with slower words, the prayer gets a shape again.

Empty is not worthless

A rushed prayer can still discharge the obligation. We will not say salah is worthless without khushu. The scholars’ settled position is kinder than the voice in your head at night. The Abu Dawud report about a tenth being written is a warning that much can be lost. It is also, read without panic, a statement that something is still written. Keep standing. Slow the next one.

The Qur'an names the prayer as remembrance (20:14) and names success with khushu in the prayer (23:1-2). Remembrance needs time the way speech needs time. You do not remember a person by saying their name as you pass them on the stairs. You stop. Salah is the stop. Rushing turns it back into the stairs.

Do not turn slowness into a performance

Some people, once they decide to slow down, begin to perform slowness for themselves. They listen for a feeling. They check whether this ruku was deeper. That checking is another haste, a haste of the nafs to collect a result. Do the slower recitation. Leave the result. If nothing sweetens, you have still told the truth with your mouth: these are words, not a blur.

Understand what you say, Ghazali says. Slowness serves that. A separate guide on this site stays with understanding. Do not add it tonight if tonight's work is only speed.

Named source

Abu Dawud reports that a servant may have only a tenth of the prayer written. Paraphrase, collection named, no invented wording. Ghazali, The Mysteries of Prayer: the inattentive prayer is not remembrance. Ibn al-Qayyim: khushu when the heart is emptied for the prayer and the prayer is preferred to everything else.

One practice

Next step

Slow the recitation in the next salah. Halve your speed so the words have room to be words. This is already on this site. It adds under two minutes. It will not promise that the emptiness lifts. It will stop you treating the prayer as a corridor.
