Presence in sujood

The closest a servant is to his Lord is in sujood. Stay there long enough to notice you have arrived.

Khushu in sujood is the search when the rest of the prayer feels like travel and the forehead is the only place that still might be a place. The closest a servant is to his Lord is in sujood (Sahih Muslim 482). That is the report this page will stay with. It does not say you will feel the closeness. It says the closeness is there. A dry sujood is still a sujood. A rushed sujood is the usual way of refusing the closeness you came down for.

If your mind wanders the moment the head meets the floor, you are not broken. The floor is where the day's leftover images often play. Ghazali's teaching still applies: presence of heart comes when causes of distraction are cut beforehand. Sujood cannot do all the work if the phone, the room, and the speed were left uncut.

What the report is for

Muslim 482 is used, too often, as a slogan. Used that way it becomes another stick: I went down and I felt nothing, so I must be far. The report is a location, not a mood. Closest is a description of the posture Allah honored. Your job is to go there and not flee. Feeling the honor is not in your job description.

Ibn al-Qayyim's line about emptying the heart and preferring the prayer has a simple shape in sujood. You prefer this few seconds to getting up. You empty, as far as you can, the plan for after taslim. You stay. Staying is the preference made visible. People who bounce off the floor are often not rebellious. They are still in the previous room, and the forehead was only a tap on the way through.

The Qur'an says to establish the prayer for remembrance (20:14) and not to be of the heedless (7:205). Sujood is one of the places the prayer itself built for that remembrance. Heedlessness in sujood is ordinary. The treatment is not a speech. The treatment is time, and a gaze that already knows where it is going.

The gaze that serves the going down

Fixing the gaze at the place of sujood is the practice this page sends you to. It costs no extra time. You keep the eyes on one spot on the floor for the whole prayer, including the standing, so that when you go down you are going to a place you have been looking at. The mind has less to invent. The body has a mark.

This is useful in a crowded masjid, where a bare room is not available. It is useful at home, where the room can be stripped and still the eyes need a rule. It is useful in sujood itself, because a wandering gaze in the standing often becomes a wandering film once the eyes close or blur on the carpet.

A bare room, when you can have one, supports the same work. Remove what the eyes will collect before you stand. Then the place of sujood is not competing with a dozen other objects. The book times that practice. This page will not stack it with the gaze as a double assignment. Know it exists. Do the gaze.

Do not turn sujood into a performance

Longer sujood can become a way of asking for a state. The report about closeness does not include a stopwatch. If you lengthen, lengthen a little, without an audience, including the audience in your own head. This guide will not invent a count or a new dua as a step. Dua in sujood exists in the book as its own practice. Here the work is presence in the sujood you already do: arrive, stay, get up without having fled.

A servant may have only a tenth of the prayer written (Abu Dawud). Racing the sujood is one of the ways a prayer shrinks. Slow the recitation around it so the going down is not a gasp between two hurried standings. Again: one practice on this page. Slowness is named so you do not treat the gaze as a magic while the mouth still sprints.

When sujood is dry

Dry sujood for months is a known misery. It does not cancel Muslim 482. The closest is still the closest. You keep going down. You cut a cause before the next prayer. You do not make a feeling the entrance ticket. If the dryness is everywhere in the life, not only in salah, the sources page already tells you to consider a physician. Worship and medicine are not rivals.

Named source

Sahih Muslim 482: the closest a servant is to his Lord is in sujood. Paraphrase, number as given, no invented wording. Ghazali, The Mysteries of Prayer: cut the causes of distraction beforehand. Ibn al-Qayyim: empty the heart for the prayer and prefer it to everything else.

Next step

In the next salah, fix the gaze at the place of sujood. One spot on the floor for the whole prayer. This is already on this site. It costs no extra time. It does not promise that sujood will sweeten. It gives the going down a place the eyes already know.
