How to have khushu in salah

Presence is prepared before takbir. The scholars start with the causes, not with a feeling.

How to have khushu in salah is the wrong order if you start inside the prayer. Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, in Ihya' Ulum al-Din, The Mysteries of Prayer, says presence of heart (hudur al-qalb) comes when the causes of distraction are cut beforehand. You do not argue the mind into stillness after you have already brought the whole day onto the mat. You cut what you can cut, then you stand. That is the method the scholars wrote. It is not a promise that the heart will arrive on a schedule. It is a way of making arrival possible.

People who still pray and feel nothing often look for a technique they can run during al-Fatiha. Sometimes that helps. More often the prayer was lost in the ten minutes before it. The phone was in the hand. The room was full. The body arrived at the last second. Then the person asks why the heart did not show up. Ghazali's answer is older than the phone and still fits it: cut the causes first.

Start before you say Allahu akbar

The prayer has a door. Habit treats the door as optional. You wipe, you face the qibla, you begin. The scholars treated the door as part of the prayer's mercy. A man waiting for the prayer is counted as being in prayer (Bukhari and Muslim). That report is not a productivity tip. It is a description of a person who has already left the other work. Waiting is already a cutting of causes.

Arriving before the adhan is the same idea in a working day. Eight minutes, once a day, in the place of prayer before the call comes, so the prayer does not start cold. That practice is already on this site. It does not require a new personality. It requires leaving the room you are in a little earlier than you do now. For some people that is the whole war. For some people it is only the first cut.

Two minutes of stillness before takbir is the smaller door, usable when you cannot arrive early. You stand on the mat without moving until the noise in you settles, then you begin. Again: already on this site. Already timed. Already honest about what it does not do.

Cut what you can actually cut

Ghazali's line about causes of distraction is easy to turn into a life overhaul. Do not do that. One cause, cut, is more like the tradition than a new identity by Friday. The treatments this site already uses are small on purpose.

The phone out of the room. Not face down on the mat. Out. The last thing you looked at is often the first thing you remember when the forehead goes down. That is not a mystical claim. It is how attention works, and Ghazali would have recognized the mechanism even if he never saw a glass screen.

A bare room, or at least a bare line of sight. Removing what the eyes will collect so the heart is not asked to refuse twenty objects at once. Fixing the gaze at the place of sujood is the same medicine in a crowded masjid, where you cannot undress the walls. One spot on the floor. The whole prayer.

Slow recitation. Halve the speed so the words have room to be words. Ghazali also says to understand what you say. Speed is one of the ways understanding is made impossible. You cannot prefer the prayer to everything else (Ibn al-Qayyim's condition for khushu) while racing the prayer so you can return to everything else.

Understand the words you already say

A person can ask how to have khushu in salah while reciting a language he has never sat with. That is not a moral failure. It is a missing cause. Ghazali puts understanding among the things that serve presence of heart. You do not need to become an interpreter. You need to know what “iyyaka na'budu” is doing in your own mouth.

On this site that work is often a slow recitation first, and then, in the book, living with one ayah of al-Fatiha for a week. The guide on this site about understanding what you recite stays with the first of those, because we do not invent steps here. Slow the words you already have. Let them be said as speech, not as a password.

Do not make a feeling the proof

Ibn al-Qayyim's definition (the heart standing before Allah) can be turned into a hunt. Did I stand. Did I feel the standing. Was it like last Ramadan. That hunt is another cause of distraction, installed in the middle of the prayer. The scholars did not tell you to take your temperature in ruku.

Allah says not to be of the heedless (7:205). Heedlessness is a real disease. Panic about heedlessness is also a disease. The treatment is the next cause you can cut, and the next salah you still attend. A servant may have only a tenth of the prayer written (Abu Dawud). That report is a warning against rushing and absence. It is also, read carefully, a mercy: something is still written. The scholars did not use it to tell people to stop.

Normalize the wandering before you add a second practice. One practice, kept, is the method this site repeats. The rush is the problem, not the cure.

Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, Ihya' Ulum al-Din, The Mysteries of Prayer: presence of heart (hudur al-qalb) comes when the causes of distraction are cut beforehand. Understand what you say. The inattentive prayer is not remembrance. Paraphrase of the argument, not a forged quotation.

One practice

Next step

Arrive before the adhan for one prayer today. Be in the place of prayer before the call comes. Sit or stand. Do not start a new task. When the adhan begins, you are already there. This is the practice called arriving before the adhan on this site. Eight minutes, once a day. It does not promise khushu. It cuts the most ordinary cause: starting cold.
